Police officers often ask permission to search people's cars. There's nothing illegal when the government asks. Surprisingly, most people allow these searches. Even criminals allow them. Now, people let the government search their entire computer for no cause whatsoever.

There's something about positions of authority. People become compliant and complaisant. But we should be ever more vigilant, ever more suspicious, ever more demanding of government officials at every level. We should be suspicious of government communiques and web sites. We should refuse to allow our rights to be violated, for no other reason than to preserve the principle that we can say no to the government.

We, the people, have constitutional rights, yet few will use them. Then how long can our rights last?
